IR sensors (down sensors)
by Hao Zhang - Wednesday, January 20, 2010, 08:44 AM
  Hi Guys,

I purchased a Complete Robot Package (Breadboard Version) last October; among the parts the later arrived Sensor Expansion Package (SEP) didn't catch me when I was leaving the US and finally reached me through a friend this week.

My questions are:
(1) The IR reflectance sensors I have seem to differ from the ones described here:
http://guides.machinescience.org/mod/book/print.php?id=723
The two I have here are QRB1114's, so are they mounted differently as described above, without using the Nylon nuts/screws (which are missing in my SEP)?

(2) I seem couldn't find the 3-pin IR receiver as described in section "Remote Control":
http://guides.machinescience.org/mod/book/print.php?id=724
What I have here is a 2-pin QSD123-ND. Is this the right IR receiver I should use?

Thanks!

Just to clarify, the nylon standoffs, screws, and nuts are needed only for mounting the analog front sensors (2Y0A21). A capacitor on the back of this device prevents it from mounting flush with the robot frame. The nylon hardware just provides room for this component. With the digital front sensor (GP2D15), and with all versions of the down sensors (QRB1114), no nylon hardware is needed. Instructions for installing older versions of the down sensors are provided here: http://guides.machinescience.org/mod/book/view.php?id=976

Re: the IR receiver for the Remote Control robot project, you should have received this item in the kit. The component you mention (QSD123-ND) is a light sensor, whose use is covered in the Building Blocks tutorial (http://guides.machinescience.org/mod/book/view.php?id=713). If you did not receive the three-pin IR receiver, we can ship a replacement. Just let us know.

Thanks Ivan for your quick reply. I did have found the 3-pin IR receiver (labelled as B919). It seems the kit components I got are the older discontented version; however I placed my order on Oct. 20 2009 ("Complete Robot Package" @$232, order id #276), not too long ago. Was there a mistake in my shipment?

Thanks.
